We went to the ferry ticket office to get the ticets to the island where the hotel is and the the ticket sales agent warned us against going since there were reports of high swells that would most likely cancel the ferry for the next few days and we would miss our flight.
He would know, its his job! so we decided against going. We explained it to the hotel, even with proof from weather reports about the swells. They refused to refund our stay.
the next day I provided more proof with the website of the ferry showing that indeed, it had been cancelled.
Still the hotel refused to do any kind of compensation - not even an offer to change the date or slight discount on future bookings, a way for us both to gain from the uncontrollable situation.

I know they don't control the weather, and the booking did not have free cancellation. So by all rights they dont have to refund me. They don't.
I just thought they would be understanding and show some kind of service attitude or polite and professional communication that would make me want to stay there in future. Just a bit of human empathy that I still believe in.
Oh well, they got their money for nothing, and I learnt a lesson.
